does anyone know if there is a difference between a 1984 318i automatic rear differential and a 1985 318i manuel rear differential because i have two 318i and we are converting the 1984 to a 5 speed but we don't know if we have to change the differentials around too.
the diff housing will be the same but the gearing may be different. Look for a metal tab about 2" long and about 3/8" wide, it will have the ratio stamped in it.
i know for the e36's you must change out your differental when coverting auto to manual this is due to the gearings, If you were to put a manual tranny on the auto differental you would have a top speed of about 80mph but you would get there pretty fast hahaha, but yeah you do need to change out the differental!
