90W GL-5 gear oil seems to be the ticket for the differential (1990 3-series owner's manual).
Wipe the grime

from the transmission, and you should see a sticker saying what goes in. The sticker happened to be bottom-front near where the transmission bolts to the engine. In my 91 318i manual five-speed, it happens to be automatic transmission fluid. My experience aside, you have to confirm it for yourself.
