differential and manual tranny oil

The manual says gl4 for the manual gearbox and 90 for hypoid gears. Is the gl5 a substitute for the gl4? Can it be used in a 1986 320i? Can a regular gear 85W90 gear oil be used in the differential or does it has to specifically be made for Hypoid gears, which by the way what is hypoid gear?

Everywhere that I have read you can use regular gear oil for the differential, which I have been thinking about doing here soon to my 86 325es. I am not sure for the gearbox.

90W GL-5 gear oil seems to be the ticket for the differential (1990 3-series owner's manual).

Wipe the grime from the transmission, and you should see a sticker saying what goes in. The sticker happened to be bottom-front near where the transmission bolts to the engine. In my 91 318i manual five-speed, it happens to be automatic transmission fluid. My experience aside, you have to confirm it for yourself.
