on my old car that used to happen every now and then, also when that happened my clock light would go out too?
i fixed it by hitting the top of the dash board with my hand while driving around 30-40mph. i dont know why 30-40mph but its weird?

try that and see what happens could be something loose then.

if everything else works its most likely the speedometer pickup located on the rear differential. their connectors have a tendency of oxidizing and not sending the signal like they should.

pull the electrical boot off the connector on the rear differential and look at the condition of the pins. spray them down really well inside the connector and on the pickup itself with contact cleaner or WD40 and wait a bit, then clean them off a bit with a small wire brush if you have one.

hook it back up and hopefully it'll work again, otherwise the sensor itself could be bad, or its a problem with the dash.

most likely the sensor.

I'm willing to bet the sodered pin on the back of the cluster has come undone. This is a very common problem. This will also explain why hitting the dash can make it work sometimes cause you well get the pin to touch again. Most shops fimilar with BMW's should be able to do this repair in an hour or so.
