I am curently saving money to buy an E30 M3, but.... i find that 192hp is just far to little power for me . So i have always been a big motor head but i like unexpected conversions (i put an RX-7 Rotary into a 1972 VW beetle) and i was kicking around the idea of putting an E46 M3 or M5 engine into the E30, but seeing as i am fairly new to BMW specs im not even sure that the engine would fit physicly without frame cutting and welding which im not to interested in doing. Also another fear is all the computer work the new bimmers have on thier engines. SO after all the rambeling i will get to the questions A) is this conversion possable (yes i know everything is possable) B) What are the major conversion points ..... I.E. Tranny, suspension, so on and so forth. C)if this has been done before can any one point me in teh direction of in depth detail? Thanks in advance. This project probably wont start for a few years now, (get the car, get the engine build the engine do all the car work, and THEN pull old engine and tranny and swap in new stuff) but im kicking the idea around so i would like to start getting my info together. Again Thanks alot guys.

you are really asking us a question that none of us can truthfully answer.
we all would like to think that we know what a bad@$$ M5 into e30 conversion would need.....
my mechanic will tell you exactly what i, and everyone will tell you.....YES IT IS POSSIBLE. AND,,,,YES, ITS GOING TO CO$T YOU!!!!
i know for a fact that it will fit, but its not easy. thats all the advice i can offer, but if you are serious......really REALLY serious.....i can put you in touch with a mechanic that can help....but not for free.
the e30 m3 is fast, but what makes it such a saught after car is the balance and suspension it offers. Yes it only has a four-banger but the thing can move! now if you go in there and drop in a HEAVY e36 or e46 m3 engine in there you are gonna fuck things up with weight and suspension problems (not to mention that you will need to convert EVERYTHING) and make headaches for yourself. For the price you can get an e36 m3 and still have money left over to make it handle just as well as the e30.
It would be a better decision to do this in a regular E30 rather than an M3, your looking at 15k for the M3 alone not to mention another 15k for the swap. But if you do this I am first in line for the S14 and tranny.
Thanks for the info and the offer to put me in touch with someone as i said tho, this project is just an idea that wouldnt come into view for a couple of years i may take u up on that offer as plans become more concrete!
Spielhur,
Thanks alot for the alternat options and views if i have the will and ability to hold off on buying a car i may just keep saving and go for the E36 but its tough being a college boy and all!
again Thanks to both of you ..... Keep it comming guys!
