which is the converter and which is the resonator?

I am in need of a new catalytic converter, but which is the cat? Is it the one that is built into the exhaust manifold or is it more towards the muffler section? one would think that it would be the first thing to come AFTER the manifold, and then there is the resonator, and then the muffler, but that would be an awful catalytic converter-looking resonator. which is it?

the way you described is how bmw does it on newer models, but e30's have the cat where the resonator would be, therefore e30s dont have resonators.

i was doing research on mitchell on demand at our shop today and found out that my car uses TWO cats, one is a 3-way catalytic converter and the other is known as an "oxidizing bed" so they both could be clogged, time to break out the torch and start welding!

on e30s there is only one cat but its seperated into 2 sections....
