Hello, I am in the middle of replacing my slave cylinder which could be the problem in your case. The easiest way to test this is depress the clutch pedal and then look underneath the transmission on the drivers side for a puddle of brake fluid. My clutch would not engage and I had to coast on the highway in nuetral until I could pull over.

definitely replace your clutch slave cylinder (~$40) and possibly the master cylinder (~$60) as well, good insurance to prevent taking apart and bleeding the system twice. i has the same problem, drove it like that for some time until it was just so annoying i replaced both and my clutch now works perfectly... its not even that difficult, you can probbaly do it in couple hours...
This is a little off topic but it still has to do with clutches. my pedal isnt getting soft or all that but its kind of rough and i can feel the vibrations from the engine, i started noticing it a couple days ago but today when i went to start my car up i turned it on and pressed the clutch pedal to put it into gear and it started making this freakin loud screeching noise. Any idea what it is? Also what is the recommended mileage to replace the clutch? I heard it was 50k miles and i looked at the records and there are none about the clutch being replaced. I am the fourth owner of the car and it now has 201k+ miles on the original tranny and clutch.

i have a 91 318is clutch and all parts im trying to get rid of for VERY VERY good price......(meaning, make an offer, and i may take it cuz im trying to get rid of all the parts i have before i move.)
How much for your tranny, flywheel, and clutch? How many miles you got on them? If you want less than 1k consider it a deal

i have most of the service records for the tranny, 3 gears are less than 1 year old, the other 2 are still perfect. clutch is fairly new, but in good shape, flywheel....is a flywheel, should be great too, the tranny was off the car and the shop (BMW ONLY) didn't see ANY problems.
if ur serious, pm me ur phone # and when i should give you a call tomorrow.
hows $500 sound? anything else you need?
why you selling it all? your car dead? or just spare parts

How much for your intake boot? I think thats what its called. It connects from the intake manifold to the air flow sensor/filter or whatever it is. I give you a call sometime this week if i think of anything else.

just a suggestion to all who are changing their slave/master cylinders....replace the hose as well. when they get old the inside diameter shrinks and causes the clutch pedal to retract slowly...therefore causing clutch slippage. as long as your are down there you want to get it out of the way and bleed the system only once.
also...it is sometimes difficult to get the air out of the line from the master to the slave cylinder as it usually has a high point in it. If you have this trouble try this....take a large (i mean very large) syringe and connect a rubber hose to the end. fill with brake fluid and connect to the bleeder of the slave cylinder. Now force the fluid back throught the system. this will cuase the air to be forced out to the top of the reservoir. then make sure to bleed the system noramlly afterwards just to be certain it is all good.
good luck to everyone that is doing the repair. I had to do this a few years back and I know how much of a pain in the butt it can be.
