Check Engine Light On, What To Do?

The CHECK ENGINE light is on with my 1990 E30 coupe, what does that mean and what do I do to get rid of it? I recently had my water pump, timing belt, clutch and radiator replaced, so the CHECK ENGINE light shouldn't have came on.

hi i,m on my second E30 and both of them get a disc pad warning light popping up every now and again. i,ve been told its something to do with the motherboard. maybe the other guys know more. the first time this happened i took all the wheels off to check the pads and they were perfect. so it could be that. hope you have some luck steve

for the check engine light, you might want to get a "Oil Service Light Reset Tool with Engine Fault Code Reader" (quoted from bavauto.com, bmpdesign.com also sells similar tools). if you cant seem to find out what is wrong, perhaps a error code will come up with the tool.

The Brake lining light is set off when the sensor near the pad touches the rotor. these are supposed to be replaced everytime the pads are changed, but sometimes can be resued if it was not broken when the sensor itself is removed. On bavauto.com these are called "Brake Pad Wear Sensor Wire" and they are pretty cheap. check to make sure your pads are not too worn down. if there is still some brake material left, remove the old sensor and snap in a new one, its really easy.

I have two E30's 89 and 90. My check engine like blinks when I start the car.
I had brakelight bilbs go bad. I replaced them but the light comes on when starting then immediately goes away when I depress the brake. I have a reset tool but been unable to clear the brake light signal.
Anyway. Once I depress the brake everything is normal.

the brake light on the check control panel is supposed to do that. the reason is that the car cant check the circuit until current goes thru it. and that only happens when you close the circuit, i.e. press the brake pedal
