Central locking controller

G,day from Australia , my son's 1984 323i has a problem with the central locking not working . This applies to all the locks ( none will operate the central locking) whether you use the key or manually operate from inside . I have checked the obvious things like blown fuses and doors not closed and all these seem to be fine . After searching on this site and looking at the manual I now need to check the main controller , but I cannot find it . I have looked behind the glove compartment as some posts say it should be there but there are only plugs back there . Any advice is welcome .

I think it is in one of the door kick panels. In the US it's on the Drivers side. Not sure if it will be the same side in Australia.
