CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW RETRIEVE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODES ON A 1987 BMW 325i?

I have an 87 325i automatic 4-door sedan and I need to find out how to retrieve the check engine light codes. I have the Haynes manual for that year and series (87-91) but it only gives info on how to retrieve codes for a 1988 and on. I also know that turning the key to the on position and looking for the codes does not work and neither does the stomp test (so I have heard) So I am assuming there is some major difference with the 87. I have searched everywhere trying to find out how to obtain the codes but I have had no luck and I hope someone can tell me here.

actually there is no way to do it yourself without a factory unit. I have an 88 325 and have, I bet, the same Haynes manual. I have a NA version and what is in the British Haynes simply doesn't apply. I wish it does but it doesn't.

the real issue here is, what's going on with the car? screw the diagnotic codes, they can set be in error anyway by downstream errors. Question is, what's up?

You might try the stomp method, if someone says it doesn't work give it a try, you will know in 5 minutes.

Turn the ignition on (not the engine). The check light will come on, then quickly press the gas pedal all the way down and lift all the way up 5 times. You need to do it quickly. If done correctly the cel will flash once and go out, then it will flash the faults. It will flash in 4 bursts, each burst represents a number. For Example:

Flash (short pause) Flash Flash Flash Flash (short pause) Flash Flash Flash Flash (short pause) Flash Flash Flash Flash (longer pause) indicates a code of 1444. Each number of flashes in each sequences represents the number in the code.

I agree, it's pin 7 and (without looking it up) 19 I believe. Don't hold me to that but.....just make a jumper wire and bridge and ignite and wait...the service/oil/profit light should go out. I could look this up to be sure if you want (because if I'm wrong it would be not good)...but I think it's 7 and 19.....

Check Engine Light Fault Code

When I bought the car (almost a year ago) it was not running. The guy I bought it from broke the timing chain on it. So instead of replacing the whole engine I took a chance and just replaced the head (which my dad just got around to doing a few weeks ago). Which paid off because now the car runs (after a kinda rough idle when starting it) and sounds great...however I have not been able to drive it because while test driving it the check engine light came on (and went back out) and the car kept driving smooth and as it should, but as I slowed down the car kinda bucked, the light came back on and then the car stalled. So right now it's a mystery to me (and my dad is BS'n now because he didn't want me to get the car in the first place and I don't think he wants to keep messing with it...long story lol). I was trying to find out if the light flashed due to an actual problem and not just in error (that's why I wanted to check the code just to make sure). Maybe getting a fault code reader might be best?? My dad seems to think (thru his research) that the car might need an Idle speed stabilizer as well??? Any thoughts???

On E30 reset the service light:
For cars with the 15 pin diagnostic connector
- With the ignition switch at(position two)and the engine not running, grounding pin seven(7)of the diagnostic connector for approximately three(3) seconds will reset the oil service lights.Grounding pin seven(7) for approximately twelve(12)seconds will do an inspection service reset.
On the newer car I think you connect pin 7 and 19 with jump wire(E36).
On E30 I´m sure its pin 7 and the ground.
Afther short times,if the service light is on again, the problem is two batery on the dash board. They need to be repleced with new one.
I did that on (E30)318i touring,320i coupe & 325i M technic
