A/C and Fuel don't mix!

Why the hell does my A/C suction hose have a metal part on it with two lines running from the other side of the car with fuel in them? What do the lines and the metal part do?

Here's a pic of the thing. The big connection in the back is A/C and the small ones are fuel.
One goes to the fuel press reg and I can't see where the other one goes. Sorry the pic is so big.

I know what that is, it's fuel heat exchanger, used mostly on mercedes benz, it cools the fuel to prevent vapor lock. Why the person put it on the car is odd, BMW's are not prone to vapor lock, unless you live on the equator or the person thought he could get a few hp with it but any gain would be lost from the load of the A/C. Odd.....

Really weird. I just had that hose rebuilt, so I guess I'll leave it. Won't hurt, will it?

No, it won't hurt it. Since there are no moving parts inside, there is nothing that can really go bad.
