Buying advice

I looked at an '89 325i 5-spd with 232k miles. The body and interior are absolutely perfect, but the dealer says that the timing belt snapped so he is selling it as-is for $1,000

I know some engines get destroyed when this happens (Honda, etc ). But the dealer told me that the engine in this BMW is a "free spinning" engine that allows enough clearance for the valves not to get bent?

Bent valves or not, is the car still worth it or should I move on?

bullshit

the engine in the e30 bmw are "interference" engines. therefore if the timing belt snaps then that means that the valves are bent and the head is shot. the dealer is full of shit and is trying to scam you. if you do buy the car keep in mind that u will need a new head. SOO $1000 + new head= ? good luck.

You may be able to pick up a used head for somewhere in the neighborhood of $250. But having the head rebuilt, even if you do the removal and reinstallation is probably going to cost you around $1000-$1500 depending upon the machine shop you use. I'd tell the dealer that he's a bone head, and offer him $700 for the car if you still want it. Actually, offer him the $700 first, then when you sign, call him a moron.
