as some of you may know awhile back i bought a 1984 325e after driving it home (a total of 12 miles) i started getting a really loud metal to metal sound coming from the head,,i was sure that the cam belt had slipped a few teeth and that one of my valves was tapping a piston,,so i put the car away for a month not starting it again as to not do any more harm.well last weekend i finally got it to my garage and tore into it,,replaced the belt(old one looked fine) tensioner,,water pump threw all back together and hand turned the motor,,every thing felt perfect so i started her up!!! and to my angry surprise the sound was still there, knowing my timing was right i poped the valve cover of to find the #9 lifter actually BROKEN at the tip. so this whole time that tiking was the broken chunk of lifter being thrown against the valve cover.has any one ever seen such a thing??,im thinking that since all the lifters seem to be out of adjustment (lots af lifter tick) that maybe this one was so outa whack that the tapping finally got to it and it snapped??
any input would be great,, james

if its broke.....the obvious: fix it.
as to why...ur guess sounds very probable. i have a friend with a wrx.sti who threw a rod through the head and out the top of his hood up in Big Bear......tragic.
how r the springs? maybe they r really tired and need to be replaced also....
may b a good idea to fix all of them while u have it off....
have u checked the valves.....and compression?
have fun.
yes i ment rocker arm,,oopps shoulda payed more attention to what i was typing
no not normal power,,choppy idle and hesitation
valves are good,,compression is ok,,springs could use to be replaced
