Broken Door Lock

I just broke my driver' side door lock. The lock with the tumblers came out with my key and all the other parts fell to the bottom of the door. I definite need a new part, and would like to know if you have had the same experience> Is this something quite easy to replace myself of does it have to be taken in to a dealer?

If it is like most cars and I am guessing that it is, there is a clip that goes on the inside of the door around the lock assy to hold it in place. They have been known to work loose from time to time. Before you buy anything pull your door panel off and see what is laying in the bottom of the door.
Also you should be able to look at the lock assy and see groves in it where the clip will go.
If it is set up this way then it is easy to put it back in. Slide it back in the hole make sure everything is hooked up inside the door and put the clip back on.
You will probably have to remove the side airbag for this depending on what year car you have. Make sure you unhook the the battery before taking the airbag out other wise it might blow up in your face. Leave the battery unhooked until after you have the airbag reinstalled other wise you will set an airbag code.

Thanks for your response Kuma. My car is a 1989 325i and it does not have side air bags. I've collected the parts off the bottom of the door panel and it is in about 6 pieces. One part looks like it is broken. I'll have another look to make sure.

Please make sure the person knows how to fix it. My door handle was broke so trying to save some money I decided to take it to a body shop. The only fixing he did was to make sure that my door won't open from the inside or out. My door is fixed thanxs 2 BMW and for the body man. While he'll be seening me in COURT
