it comes on if u need new brake pads. You need new brake pads! MAke sure u buy the lining sensor when u replace the bad because once the light comes on, it wont go off until u replace the sensors... they arent expensive, and u can get them at bavauto.com. the other possibility is that ur sensor was old and it failed prematurely, in either case it needs to be placed... be sure to knwo that there are two, one for one front wheel and one for one rear wheel
changing my front brake pads cost me $21 and 45 mintes of work - sure beats a $130 estimate from Midas.

I have a problem with the brake lining light. It comes on sometimes and goes off sometimes. I have looked at the front pads and the sensor is not even touching yet and the pads look fine. I'm guessing that when the sensor is worn down and the circuit is broken, it stays on permanantly, so my problem might be electrical. Can anyone confirm this ? A loose connection ?
Also, I don't have a manual, but the light i am talking about is an empty circle with a dashed line on the left and right. This is the lining warning light , isnt it ?
I am a newbie and I looked for the answer on this forum but didn't find it, so apologies if it's an old question...
