I have some questions regarding the replacement of the stock H1 bulbs of my BMW to new and brighter bulbs.

For starters, I started with the cheapest solution, buying a pair of H1 Xenon bulbs from ebay for $4.99. I have seen a major difference for the high-beam lights but for the low-beam lights it's a dissapointment. ghead

My car has the "smiley" type low-beam lights (European specs).

I believe that the problem is that the filament or the entire bulb is not entirely the same with the original Osram H1 that came installed since 1989.

My questions are:

1. What is the best, aftermarket H1 bulb I can get that will produce the best light output considering the low-beam type I have. I have seen on ebay many H1 models but I really don't know what to choose - ranging from Osram to Philips etc.

2. Does the fact that I have "smileys" affect the performance or affects the light output for non-stock H1 bulbs?

I do not seek for an HID conversion since it is way to expensive.

Thank you in advance

Osram and Sylvania are the same company. But The Osrams are not available here in the US. Sylvania have a blue coating on them. Osrams are a super white bulb, no coatings on them.

Me I prefer the osrams but to each their own. So I won't start rice crap war.
