I was driving my bimmer one day when something went wrong while shifting from 1st to 2nd. It made a some kind of stripping noise like it wont go into gear. When driving normally it doesnt do it much, but when redlining 1st gear, it happens during shifting into 2nd gear.
hmmm, well I think I know what you mean. Sorry I don't know the answer, but when I was shifting from first into second I think my bimmer made that noise you're talking about. But this only happened a couple of times (I think it happens ***for me *** because I shifted into second too fast).
Also, my shifter kinda vibrated it was like VVVRRRRR kinda noise.
btw i have 1984 325e. Sorry, not much help i guess....
it sounds to me like your syncros may not be good. I'm not a good mechanic or anything, but I know that the grinding you hear when you mess up a shift alot of the time is the "dog teeth" trying to mesh the gear with the well whatever the gear meshes up to. haha, another wheel of some sort. hmmm, you can tell I'm not good at this. I estimate it being your bad syncros, I had to drive a car with bad syncros between second and third for a while. Third had a pop-out-issue or something, when you shift into gears that it grinds like that, hold the shift in gear really firm with your hand and see if it happens smoothly like that, thats what i had to do in the fox. haha. Hope this helps, or gets you on the right track.
Damn I just thought of something else it could be, but it slipped out of my head... Oh, check your car. Turn it on, and then when you start it, turn off all your radio and fan, ac, all that shit. Press the clutch in, if you can hear a high pitched sort of a whine, it may be a bad clutch assembly. The whine from what I have heard is the sound of a throw out bearing going bad. So you may try that, I know thats one of the things I hear when I do it. So I am planning to replace my clutch. Also, does anyone know if the 1985 318i had solid lifters? I'm beginning to wonder, because if not, it sounds like I may have a bad valve or something. I'm trying to figure that out before it becomes bad. But if we have solid lifters then that might explain some of the noise. I may just be paranoid. Oh well. Thanks.
