was wondering when my Bimmer was going to start making me worry.

I went on a long drive last week, I drove from Tampa, fl to Maryland. just under 1000 miles
That gave me plenty of time to analize how my car was working.

Here is what I had an issue with. I was going 100 and I felt like the car had more to give..(this is an automatic 91 325i Conv.)
so I hit the gas all the way down. The tranny kicks down to 3rd and the engine starts redlining (no shock there) my question is; shouldn't cars (not) downshift after a certain speed? all other automatic cars I have had would never shift down to the next lowest gear once I was going a certain speed. this causes serious concerns to me. I am doing 110 or 120 and if I floor it. It goes to 3rd and I am afraid that I will blow the motor! if it would just stay in 4th I think I wouldn't have that issue. until I hit at least 130mph.

Second concern;

I thought there was something wrong with the adjustment on the kickdown cable so I adjusted it. to see if it helped. Well It didn't help. Now the car surges when I am accelerating. If I start at a red light and hit it on the green. the car starts to accelerate and it will hit second, starts surging torque, no torque, then torque again. and then it goes to 3rd and the same thing happens. it is no longer a smooth acceleration to redline like it had been. I was reading the repair manual but it is not clear enough for me. Maybe someone can help me out? the trans is not slipping but there is a problem transffering the torque. Any advise on how to correctly adjust the kickdown cable?
