in this thread i will list all of my problems that i am having with my car and maybe you can help me fix them. please keep in mind i have a 1986 325e. thanks

1. i get 10 miles a gallon while driving. my 02 sensor is brand new. (can someone please explain to me in detail what a fuel pressure regulator does)

2. when i am in park it idles very wierd. the RPM's seem to bounce from slightly above 1 to almost none at all.

3. from a dead stop if i put the pedal to the floor it doesnt respond fast at all, it takes me until about 3000-3500 RPM's until it seems like the engine wants to get me going.

4. when i start my car i hear a loud squeak coming from under the hood. the squeak seems to be my water pump. does this mean that my water pump is going bad?? (my belts are not loose.)

5. just a quick question. what is the object that is right under my alternator?? it seems to be covered in greese and the squeak i mentioned above could also be coming from this.

6. another quick question. where is my cars computer located at?? i want to get a racing chip but need to know where to find my computer.

thank you for any help that you can give me. i know i may not be as educated on BMW's as most of you are, and that is why i came to you for help.
please be as patient with me as you can and help me get my car fixed. thanks.

FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR what more do you need to know about it? try to clean out your idle control valve and air flow meter and see if that helps, also if they havent been already replace your fuel pump relay and main relay. is this a manual or auto.? your ECU is in your glove box, but if you are having all of these problems a racing chip would be the last thing i would worry about, and if you have no clue what or where any of these things are then take your car to a BMW specific shop. dont make things worse by messing with stuff you have no clue about

#2 is most likely your idle control valve... that was the prob in my 85 325e, and my 85 318i.... the others I will not speculate on/let the more knowledgeable members answer

it is an automatic.

i just want to have an idea of what is wrong with my car so i know what to research. if after i research what seems to be wrong if i find out it is something to complicated for me to do then i will take the car to a specialist. some of the things i know i can do, like the fuel pressure regulator, it is right there staring you in the face when you lift the hood. and i was hoping you guys could fill me in on what i need to do to hopefully fix it myself.

the thing belor your alt. is you rpower steering pump it could be cavitating making the sqeeking your hearing and if it is cavitating then make sure the fuid is topped up and if its drains again your pump is cavitating cause its busted. and 1,2,3 are probably all related and i believe somone answered the likley problems so i wont bother, also the computer is located in the glove box above the actual box.

alright, thanks guys. i am going to get on doing that stuff tomarrow. one last question though. how would i know if my fuel pressure regulator is bad or not? is there any way i can test it? i have topped off my tank before i knew that topping off your tank can harm the fuel pressure regulator. so what should i do?

I dont really know, but it sounds like the Mass air sensor. That would cause your engine to run rich all the time, trashing your gas mileage. Your engine running rich would cause you to get poor accelleration until you get to a spot around 3000rpm where the air better matches the fuel that the car is getting.

Try buying a used mass air sensor, or taking yours off and checking that it isnt stuck open.

As for the thing covered in grease, as stated above it is the power steering pump. I took the belt off mine, and have been happier without it. I dont know if the 325e has anything else connected to the belt for the power steering pump, if it doesnt you can just remove the belt, if you dont mind using a little extra muscle to turn the wheel when siting still.

its not the refulator that it harms is the charcole canister that is before the purge valve, it floods it and wrecks it... but anyways pull the vacume line off of it and see if fuel squirts out of it, thats one sign. or you could get a presure guage and put it on the line and get a reading as to what your fuel presure is...

first you dont have a mass air sensor, you have an air flow meter there is a difference. you can do the fuel pressure regulator your self it is really easy, you will have to pry it off of the fuel rail though, dont expect it to just slide out, dont be afraid to get a little physical with it, then get some carb clean and spray the shit out of your AFM and ICV to clean them out. You can also while you have your AFM out you can use some of that carb clean and open your throttle body and clean that out too. You may need a new AFM though

hey if you tap on it does it sound like there is a loose spring inside it? is that normal? i think mines gone south but im not sure, the flap still springs back shut and opens without sticking but if you tap on it it rattles a bit, i think that might be the solution to my rough starts.

i dont know about the sound, mine doesnt make one when i tap on it. What do you mean by rough start? normally when they go bad the car will run like it has a bad vacuum leak and will stall unexpectantly, but will run fine sometimes

it will stall some times runs bad on start up like rough idle and then you start going an it will surge and then go and some times do it twice and basicly until you floor it and then it seems to get past the barrier and it will run fine

well its happend with both engines iv had, and i changed the fuel pump so it really can only be the O2 sensor the MAF or the ICV the only problem is all the junk yard specials are all the squar connection MAF's no M42 stuff, so iv hit a problem however my friend has a 91 318i so whenever he has time im going to trade MAF's and see if my problem goes away.
