My 89 320i on occasion does not start ie. no response from the starter. This used to happen once every few weeks, but now every few days.
Could it be a relay and if so where is it located? When this fault occurs, I can start the car by shorting battery and solenoid wires at the starter. The car is an auto, so no chance of kick starting.
Neutral stafty switch? bypass it and try to start it it is located on the shifter inside the car it sounds like no power to the relay and when this swich goes bad the car thinks it is in gear and won't activate the starter...

Greetings. Safety switch ok. I heard a relay click if gear stick shifted with ign on.
I followed the sound to a relay under the glove box which was loose in its socket. I cleaned the terminals and bent for flush fit. Problem seems to be solved.
Again, thanks for giving me a good starting point.
