I have a 1986 325es with the 2.7 L ETA engine that I bought a few months ago and have been gradually restoring to showroom condition. I do most of the minor mechanical repair and maintenance work myself - partly to save money and partly becasue I love getting my hands dirty with this car. Anyway, I'm at the point where I would like to change the manual transmission fluid and don't know whattype of oil to use. Every time I asked someone, I got a different answer. Some people reccoment hypoid GL-5 oil. Others reccomend Non-hypoid GL-4 oil. Still others say to use synthetic gear oil, and even engine oil. I don't want to screw this thing up. Does anyone actually have first hand experience with this particular car and this particular procedure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a 1984 325E I'm in Canada so the specs could be a bit different. But I have confirmed this with BMW. If you get underneath your Tranny drain/fill area you should see a yellow sticker. Usually a special brand of oil is required and can only be purchased from BMW. But you can also use Dextron 3 or synthetic. I was using dextron 3 when I had the car. But if you put in the wrong kind of fluid you may notice shifting problems right away so becareful. Most mechanics I'm surprised don't know BMWs to well and they think you can just stick all kinds of shit in it. But oh well. My info was confirmed with BMW themselves but bare in mind that the specs could be different from country to country.
if everyone listend to what BMW said, and bmw was so propietary. We'd all be broke for the simple things, IE: the O rings for the E30, are about $50 and i got some for 15 bucks for something else. but works
