85' 318 needs help

hey guys, i'm new around here, but def. not to auto forums. i'm constantly on for my ranger and camry. but anyway, heres my problem. a couple of years back we bought an 85 bmw 318. 4cyl, 5spd. my dad decided to let his real estate partner drive it as a work car. one day he was drivin it and it just quit and wouldn't start back up again. his father in law(mechanic) said that the problem appeared to be in the ignition system, distributer and coil. auto zone has the parts for 300 bux. i haven't inspected it myself, but do you guys think that this is a resonable prognosis? also, does anyone know where i can save some money on those parts? we bought this car after it had been repoed. so we have no real idea of its history. it was origionally burgandy, but has since been painted metalic black. it fef. needs some tlc. thats what i intend to give it if i can ever get it running again. any help and suggestions as to what else should probably be done to it would be apreciated.

try resetting the computer by unpugging the negetive batt term.........see if that works.........and i jsut bought coil wires cap rotor and plugs and it only ran me like 200 bux from advance auto
