84_318i cluster problem - BMW Forum

Hey everyone, I have an 84 318i and the cluster is a bit carzy. I replaced the batteries in the SI board and the rev, mpg, and temp gauges got fixed, but the petrol gauge doesn't work anyone have an idea about what might be, I checked the gauge and is ok but it's like if it weren't getting any signal, I also checked the sender inside the tank and it is working, so now I don't know what it could be. Does anyone may know what it could be. Thanks.

When you disassemble the cluster, there are a set of sockets that pins slide into on the same side of the cluster as the fuel gauge. It relies on spring action to make contact with the pins from the connector. Over time they weaken and can lose contact. Try adjusting those to be sure contact is made. My cars gauge used to read completely full unless I reached under the dash to fiddle the connector.

If that does not work, I would recommend re-flowing the solder joints on pretty much everything you can find. They get old and break away from their contacts.
