i am looking to put a engine into my 1989 325ix and i was woundering if a engine from a 325i would work. i know they are the same engine ( m20b25 ) but i was woundering if the engine from the 2WD 325i would match up to the AWD trans axle of the 325ix.
that's a hell of a question...a 325i engine into a 325iX application. As a guess I would have to say that yes it would swap out as long as you are not screwing around with the transmission/exhaust/suspension...yes I would guess that the engine itself should be swapable....good luck...let me know on this one as it is an interesting question...as I own a 325iC I know that the iC and iX are six inches longer in body than regular 325i models..however that seems to be from the flywheel back. My guess is that the motors are the same.....same mounts and connections is my, and I cannot stress this too far, GUESS.. but I think I'm right. Keep us posted on this one

dont guess...
yes it will work, just swap oil pans and your good to go. the ix has a specific oilpan that allows the transaxle to pass thru it.
IX oil pump is very different, it takes oil behind the oil pan and 325I takes oil from front side of the oil pan.
IX oil pump consist oil pressure relief valve, and in 2WD motor it's in block.
Also oil pump fasteners are different.

I just moded 325I RWD block to my IX.
That wasn't so big deal that I expected.
I take pictures for you to realize what have to mode.
But in fact, those blocks AREN'T same and can't swap just right that!
And for example, the oil pump runs different direction in those motors..
