Okay, that's the heart of the beast. Runs good, but after 250,000kms, she's a little dirty. I'd like to clean her up. So I had a couple of questions. First off, what is the piece of metal with two holes in it, linking the intake to the valve cover? Its really ugly and other than bolting to the two components, I can't figure a purpose for it. Can it be removed?

Secondly, to left side of the valve cover (in the picture) there are two connectors with two plugs going into them, also with a bolt bracket on the valve cover. What are these, and can they be placed elsewhere? Some other "E" cars don't seem to have them.

Last question: best way to clean and shine up that valve cover without taking it off the engine is? What kind of cleaner?

Thanks in advance.

The larger bracket supports the cold start valve and the intake where it hangs over the engine. Maybe one could paint that along with the valve cover? I agree, its not the prettiest thing, but I'm sure it has purpose.

The two plugs are crucial to the engine/ecu, and it won't start if they are left unplugged. I suppose you could relocate them, but watch heat, electrical interference, cutting, etc. If you remove the bracket they are on, you will be left with 2 holes anyhow. I'll be damned but I don't remember what they are, and the Bentley is at home.

As far as cleaning the cover... I used Simple Green and a nylon brush (for kitchen cleanup, tires, etc) when I had it off this weekend for a valve adjustment. Hosed it off, and let it dry in the sun, inside and out. That stuff is amazing. Just spray it full concentration onto a wet surface, let soak, repeat, and scrub lightly. Worked well for my T-belt cover, and I have 2 shiny pieces of aluminum now under the hood!

I suppose you could clean the cover while still on, but there's alot of nooks and crannies to deal with. Be careful with the water and cleaner around the electricals!

I would just take it off. Then you can do all kinds of cool stuff at the same time like adjust your valves, change some broken rocker plugs (if they are broken), and paint your cover so that it looks PIMP!!
I haven't done this myself, but plan to do it as soon as I get back to the states.

I suppose I could when the weather improves and I've got free time. I'm just not comfortable yet doing mech work myself... last car was a Plymouth Reliant, and a bitch from hell. Took the valve cover off that one, leaked like a sieve ever since, despite replacing the gaskets and using RTV sealant.

I should pick up a Bentley.

Had to get the fuel line from the manifold to the pressure regulator replaced today.. smelt gas bad on the way to work, so stopped in at the garage, and it was all cracked on the underside. The rest of the hose clamps were loose too. Well, at least its better now.

Drive on.
