320i won't start

Hello, my 1982 320i will not start. I turn the key and the motor turns over. Occasionally it will start, but die as soon as it gets to about 1000 rpms. I changed the fuel filter and made sure the fuel pump was in good working order, made sure there was gas to the injectors, made sure I was getting spark, and got a new battery, but it still doesn't start. Any help would be much appreciated.

Check your intake boot for tears or holes. More so around the air mass meter CIS unit. Also check your ignition timing.

when I was looking for the fuel filter where the damn haynes manual said it was supposed to be (It wasn't) I took out the air intake. I assume that's the intake you are talking about. I'm sorta new to working on cars so if you could clarify a bit... I put it back in but there is a chance it's not back in right.

The intake from the CIS diaphram to the throttle body must be free of air leaks. The CIS needs vacum from the intake to send the correct amount of fuel to the injectors into each cyl. Also check your cold start valve to see if it's working, and test coolant temp sensor.

Not to be a thorn in your side, but could you please explain to me what/where the fuel vacuum intake is? I havent been working on cars long.

The fuel system that provides fuel to the injectors is the hex shaped thing toward the right on the base of the distributor.

Also check the warm-up regulator, it allows extra fuel in when the engine is cold. Inside the unit is an electrically heated steel rod which changes the flow rate of the unit. Its mounted under the starter area.
