318i M10 to M42 conversion

How difficult would it be to convert my 1985 318i to an M42 from a later
318i? I'm planning on going with this over an M50 or S50 because of 1) gas mileage and 2) the price of parts (engine, trans, etc) for the conversion. I am planning on using a rebuilt M42 and rebuilt trans. Any suggestions? Any specific year? (Im seeing quite a few different on Bavarian Auto Exchange www.bmwengine.com)

If I was doing an I6 it would be an M or S50. These are much stronger, allbeit more expensive, than the M20. But I want the M42 for the mileage, and price of the conversion, primarily.

Yeah, 300 sounds pretty good for a complete engine. I'd go for it!
