Cool 1991 318i runs but won't start

Hello all, I am looking for some help with my 91 318i convertible. I am able to start the car using starting fluid and it will run just fine. After I shut it off it won't start again. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem but I really don't know how to procede. I am not sure how to test a fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump. It is my understanding that there are two fuel pumps? one in the tank and one external. Is it necessary to replace both? If not, how do I know which is the bad one? Any chance it could be something else? So far all have done is replace the fuel filter. Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Thanks,
Eric

Nope, E30s only have 1 fuel pump. Its located under the right rear corner of the rear bench seat, very easy access. Id check your fuel filter. it is located right in front of the left rear tire. Kinda tucked up by the fuel tank, but easy access. 1 other thing to check is your oil level. They have an oil pressure switch, and it turns the fuel pump on when it senses oil pressure. Also make sure you are running the PROPER viscosity of oil, it needs to be either 10w40 or 15w40.
