Lightbulb 1988 325IS chip upgrade?

1988 325IS chip upgrade? I am preparing to do some upgrades on my car after the drive shaft is done this week. I have a set of Headers on the way and some gasket/spark plug heat shields. I am finding some conflicting answers on the improvements to an IS with a replacement performance chip?

Supposedly the remove the IS speed limiter and raise the Rev Limiter? But what is the factory IS speed limiter set to and what is the factory Rev limit on an IS? How much are these really raised, I also understand is advances the timing and changes the fuel flow? Please if any of this is wrong, let me know. Is is better to add larger Higher pressure fuel injectors at the same time or is that a job for a special chip upgrade?

What chip is really the best performance chip for an E30 IS model

Thanks for the input, I am trying to spend my money carefully. I know a bigger engine would be good, but it is not in the budget for now! I also can't afford to have it off the road for that long, as it is my only car!

I will keep you posted on how all this actually works out?

a lot of you(especially those who have already invested in the high-end stuff) will have a second say on this post... but, in reality:

whether u get a $250.00 "signature" chip or a $35.00 cheap copy of a signature chip off eBay or other source, the outcome-performance wise will ALWAYS be the same.

------------

In essence, what a performance chip does is it re-maps the power curve of your car; and among the parameters altered is the rev limiter. in a performance chip it is programmed to cut-off at a higher RPM than a stock chip.

Then of course, in order to achieve the higher horsepower ratings, the ignition timing is also re-mapped(altered)/advanced.

Fuel flow, not necessarily(except through the fuel pump relay as commanded to switch ON or OFF by the DME). Fuel flow(rate and pressure) is managed by your fuel pump and ur fuel pressure regulator. Performance buffs change the fuel pressure regulator to hold a higher pressure at the injection rails-that allows for more fuel to enter through the injectors per millisecond opening time.

Thumbs up Thanks for the thoughts

Thanks for the thoughts and i will keep you all posted as this progresses! I know these chips are supposed to move up your rev limiter, but if you don't know what the factory settings, how can you be sure your not impeding it? I have a friend who has an 325E and there are big differences in our factory setting, including the tach and rev limiters, I imagine it is the same with a 325i of the same year range. Doee anyone have copies of these original specs?

Nope, not the same. there are 2 types of engines used in 1988. the 325e which has a rev limit of 5500; and the 325i/s which has a rev limit of 6500-6800. And then, there's the 325 version, which is the Super ETA series(only produced for 1 year in 1988) which is in a class of it's own.

when u purchase you chip... make sure it is the right one for your application; and the surest way to tell is that the chip should be matched to the model # of your DME. For your application, i believe your car uses the MOTRONIC 173 brain(please check to make sure). A 325/e uses a BOSCH MOTRONIC 153 or 154 brain, i believe.
