Well, an easy way to find out would be to look at the tachometer. If you have a 325e, and the motor has been swapped, hopefully someone changed the tachometer. An "eta" motor is relatively low-revving. So you'll have a max number of 5 on the tachometer. (I think the redline is.... 4500. I had to go check)
The upside to having an "i" motor is that it has around 170 hp, as opposed to the 121 hp (woot) in the "eta" motor.
mods? well, you'll probably get the most bang for you buck from a chip. I would just ensure that all the maintenance and ancillary stuff is sorted with the engine before you start modding it. Another trick is to find out what your differential gearing is. If it is numerically low (2.93 in my eta, for gas mileage), then putting a numerically higher differential will make your car FEEL faster. It all depends.
Different strokes and all that.
