You might have the much sought after "super eta" engine.

Well, an easy way to find out would be to look at the tachometer. If you have a 325e, and the motor has been swapped, hopefully someone changed the tachometer. An "eta" motor is relatively low-revving. So you'll have a max number of 5 on the tachometer. (I think the redline is.... 4500. I had to go check)

The upside to having an "i" motor is that it has around 170 hp, as opposed to the 121 hp (woot) in the "eta" motor.

mods? well, you'll probably get the most bang for you buck from a chip. I would just ensure that all the maintenance and ancillary stuff is sorted with the engine before you start modding it. Another trick is to find out what your differential gearing is. If it is numerically low (2.93 in my eta, for gas mileage), then putting a numerically higher differential will make your car FEEL faster. It all depends.
Different strokes and all that.
Hope this helps.

ironically.. if you dont swap out the tach, the needle will still sweep as if it was a 7k rpm tach(so if it says the engine is revving to 5k rpm on a ETA dash cluster its actually 7k if its really an i engine)

Just make sure you know what your doing and not just reading articles and thinking its a hobby car. It is fun but it'll be worthless if your current engine condition isn't up to par. Someone would probably back me on that.

If you want to mod your car i guess yes the chip, but i'd start spending my money to make the car last longer. IE: basic maintenance, like fluids, belts, filters, brakes basic things like maybe your suspension is gone a lil weak. The car being that old i'd replace a few things without question unless they're noted in service records of it being recently replaced.

My 2 cents

Ebay is full of performance e30 chips. Just have to know your ecu p/n in order to find the right one. I picked up a 325e chip for like $45 shipped to my house and it works exactly as advertised.

Hehe, we're gonna confuse the poor chap.

Okay, look. A Dinan chip is a Dinan chip, no matter where you buy it. When our fellow posters said "chips on Ebay", he meant you can buy them off of Ebay the auction site. Ebay doesn't make the chips, they just host the auctions for people to buy them.

With me so far?

If you in this for all out performance, the 325i motor (2.5L, 170hp) is a better start than the ETA (2.7L, 121hp). The ETA engine will be more economical, and is still pretty quick on it's feet, even hooked up to the automatic tranny. The Dinan chips will do good for both engines, but your overall road-burning performance will be better on a 325i motor. So, you want the ultimate, swap the engine. You want to be quick, but don't care if you're the fastest thing on four wheels or not, keep your ETA. They're good engines.

That help any?

I think that's a bit steep. I MIGHT pay half that, if the engine was VERY nice.
