1981 E21 323i Speedo Not Working

Greetings,

As I have said previously, new to this and if this issue has already been addressed my apologies.

Have recently bought the above mentioned car as a "project" when I first acquired the car the speedo worked but gave very erratic readings. It has now stopped all together however the odometer is still working. Am wondering whether some can advise whether i need to replace Speedo, Cable, entire panel, gaerbox!

Had this problem with the VDO unit (130000 miles) in my 1985 316 E30. BMW first told me I needed a new circuit board for the whole dash unit (£160) - no effect after replacement. During refurbishment in 2002 I dismantled the Dash unit myself and found that the teeth on the plastic gears in the speedo/odometer mechanism had literally fallen off. I live in a warm climate and summer Temps can reach 50 Centigrade inside the car in the sun so the temperature and the age of the unit may have been factors. I swapped my unit with a second hand one (with half the mileage) for €40 (for whole dash cluster) from a German salvage yard. Odometer was than 110000kms
