My son is taking auto shop and he thought it would be fun to find an old car and get it into running shape. He's a senior and is leaving for college this coming fall. This car could possiblely be his mode of transportation in the comming year. I feel that bringing a car into good working shape would be a fun, rewarding and good learning experience. I want to spend around $1500. We're looking for a car that is easy to service and reliable by nature, and has parts readily available (for the most part). I was thinking about something in the vein of an old BMW 2002. What do you guys think? Other sugggestions?
a BMW 2002 is definetly a good way to go, because its more then 30 years old, you dont have to worry about smog, so exhaust wont be as big of a problem, plus its an easy car to work with because just about any engine will fit in that bay.
So a 2002 would be a good way to go, they have definite capability, and they are really light and REALLY good looking and unique, so id say get the 2002.

i would still say 2002, or possibly restoring an E21. I know we talked about 2002's last night, i forgot to mention that bringing an E21 just back to stock specs is also a good idea. I just meant that mod'ing an E21 would cost more then normal because parts are harder to find.
so Id say:
2002; 2002tii
E21 320i or 323

you should check out that 320i in GA, sounds like a good deal, then you'd have 900$ to spend on it.
