alright guys, as you can see i am new to this forum but i need help very badly. my problem is that i have a 1986 325e and it is getting around 10 miles per gallon of premium gas. i have done nothing but pour money into this car since the day i bought it. i am hopeful that maybe you guys can offer me some ideas of what could be screwed up, and what can make me get 10 miles a gallon. if you need more details let me know and i will get as detailed as i possibly can. i really dont know what else there is to say other than i get 10 miles a gallon though. well anyway, please help me!

are you running really rich? does it make smoke and check your plugs what color are they? also is your o2 sensor working? maybe you have a fuel leak and its just pouring gas on to the ground idealy hook itup to a computer and run a diagnostics check on it see what comes up if nothing then we can think of osmthing

not last chance but it would be the quickest to tell just ask a shop to hook it up to the computer and print you off the results shouldn't be verry much maybe like 20 bucks or less i would think. and that will will pretty much solve the problem.how does it run? and pull a plug each plug and tell me what what color each one is.

first of all he wouldnt be running lean if he is using too much gas, and dont waste your time trying to get someone to hook it up to a comp. they can not pull any errors on your car, it doesnt have self diagnostic capabilities there-fore it cant tell a comp. what the problem is. Im really getting tired of repeating that statement. now for you fuel problem, there are a number of things that it could be, have you changed your fuel pressure regulator? also you could try your air flow meter

woops i meant to say rich and yes you can hook it up to a computer and get the computer to check it because its not using self diagnostics to check whether or not anythings wrong its using its own diagnostics software your thinking of a computer that pulls the info from the self diagnostics computer not somthing that does it by itself it can be done, it has been done.

sorry if i am irritating everyone it is just that i am lost and dont know what to do. i appreciate your help so far.

so what is a fuel pressure regulator, and air flow meter??? how much do they cost and where can i get them. also are they hard to install? thanks.

also when i start the car it squeaks and occasionally seems to be overheating. i replaced the thermostat and that was unsuccessful in fixing the problem so i went back to reading and read something about an bearing in my water pump or something that could be causeing the problem. if you know anything about that or how much a new water pump is please let me know.

could be your water pump but when was the last time the belt was changed, maybe its stretched and slipping? or your fan clutch is gone and its not spinning as fast as it should, when your at highways speeds does it stay at a normal temp or does it not effect it if its your fan it will run cooler on the highway then just stop and go. the fuel presure regulator regulates the fuel presure, its located on the end of the fuel rail. the mass airflow meter is right after the air filter its the boxy looking thing has a plug on it and the black rubber boot that goes to the throttle body. that thing is pretty pricey, try cleaning it, not hard to change, and the regulators like 100 bucks or so depending on where you go you can get it cheaper or more, i found one for 50 bucks and thats canadian but thats a really good deal, anyways thats only one screw and a vacume line to unplug and then you can pull it off and swap it with the other one. but those arn't neccisarily your problems...

take your car to a BMW specialist, especially if you dont know what those simple parts are. and its not a mass air flow, its an air flow meter big difference, how exactly would he go about hooking his car up to this magic computer kowalski? explain that to me and show me some info and pics on the comp.

well they're expensive otherwise id have one, but the place up the street from me has a big computer that runs diagnostics and you can hook cars up to it and it tests the sensors all the self diagnostics is pretty much the samet hing the computer does, its verry possible and its done quite often

Kowalski is not saying that the on board computer in the car is performing the diagnostics. He is saying that they make machines that you can hook up to your auto that will read how the engine is running, and can make a diagnosis based on the inputs it recieves. It has nothing to do with the kind of car you own.

For example, a 2002 could be hooked to an engine analyzer, and it will tell you if the car is running rich, or lean. If the timing is set correctly, if the spark at each cylinder is correct. And a bunch of other stuff, all on a car that has no electronics.

Here is a website for a manufacturer of such products. These systems can interface with the cars on board computer to read the codes if the car is so equipped, but they can also function on cars without computers.
