I think BMW might have done things to resolve Vanos issues on the '00 model in '01. Then they improved on it for the '02. You might want to check m5board.com. In '02 they changed the leather trim pattern on the rear seats. Most people wouldn't notice this. '03 models have a DVD nav and a regular parking light option via the high beam bulb - in addition to the angel eyes.

By the way, I'd stay away from 1st year models, i.e. the '00 E39 M5 and E60 M5.
