I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but yes, in this one case you are out of line. Much as it sucks, about the only useful service/repair manual for the E39 (1997-2003) 5-series is the Bentley Repair manual, which is a 2-volume set that retails for somewhere around $160, but can generally be found for about $120. A used manual set or a really good sale price on a new one might run $105 to $110.
I'm cheap and have always opted for a $15 Haynes manual when available, but the sad truth is that no Haynes manual is available for your car...
