I havent been here in a while, quite frankly because my 2001 330i ran without a hitch for so long. But eventually I grew tired of it and just completed purchasing a beautiful black 2000 740iL with 75k miles, it was wholesaled to me for 21,900.00.
It has a couple of issues that me and the selling dealer agreed to work together to fix since I couldnt pass it up being so cheap.
1.When first started, it puts out a puff of relatively odorless white smoke, then it calms down and doesnt put out any at all. Im thinking Valve guide seals or some such thing?
2.The car has an extremely light what I call "knock" at idle. You cant really hear it inside the car unless you listen carefully, but with the hood up, it has a slight knock to it. I am not sure what it is, but it may not really be a knock at all.
Finally, does this car have those abominable rear air struts like my old 96 Continental and 2001 STS did? I tell you I hate air struts with a passion, and if there is anyway to retrofit them with regular shocks id like to know.
Help appreciated.

White smoke on these cars may just be a normal thing. My 750 and most other 7 series tend to emit white smoke with a cold engine (based on temperature and humidity). Check BAVAUTO.com for selef leveling conversion kits, they have them for the LAD system on my 750 but have not looked at them for EDC set up.

Interesting indeed. I do have to admit its weird that it coughs up that bit at start, and then it doesnt do it at all, in fact, I noticed my 330i put out more emission poo when running than the 740 does. If the engine is fine, that would make me feel better, because I would just dump the most money I can into the suspension. Nothing ruins the refinement of these beautiful cars like a worn out suspension. This one is already starting to thud and bounce on bumps. My 96 Continental did the same thing, and it has a pronounced rear thud too. I used to think 740's and S Class were worlds apart from the domestic stuff, but Im unfortunately starting to see some funny similarities between the two. I just hope the paint doesnt go to crap like the Connie paint did!
