The chain in the transfer case is a weak point. Other than that the are nice cars. The oil pan can be a tricky item also due to the half shafts go thru it.
I also have a 1989 325iX... it's great... I had some misfortune with mine but it's all up and running now. I'd say that the X isn't as good as the new X-systems in the new X-series SUV's but for it's day it was one of the better AWD systems. The car handles awesome because of it and the 'wider-then-most' cars in it's class it has stabilitry in the corners. I've been iching to take mine to the AutoX at the speedway but there's snow staring here so I think the racing season is drawing to a close.
I wouldn't trade mine for anything... well maybe for an M5!!

much lower numbers and most of them are dead due to the cost of repairs ETC...therefore they are worth a lot more i have checked out a few but i just dont know if i wanna lose that much power in the drivetrain...though it is nice i go up through the snow a lot in the winter...i would love to pick one up like this beautiful Alpine white iX but lets be real i could get a mint e30 M3 for $1200 more that price

With all E30s watch out for rust around the rear fender where it attaches to the chassis. Also doors can rust from the inside out.
In addition to the CV joints watch out for the power steering fluid leaking from the steering rack. This is very expensive to replace. Other than that they are great cars. Most replacement parts are available online quite cheaply.
I certanly love mine! I would like to drive another e30 with the same engine. I hear people talking about the lack of power in the ix because of the all wheel drive...but it gets up and scoots to me! Maybe the Automatics are bad but I have a 5 speed.
is it the m20 engine??? or another brilliant bmw engine
