Z3 Remote keyless entry

Does anyone know if all Z3's accept the remote keyless entrys. My dad bought a used 2001 Z3 3.0 and it did not come with any remotes. I had him pick one up from ebay and I sent him the programming instructions (which worked for me on mine when I got a new remote). He can't get the car to accept the remote and we were wondering if all the Z3's used remotes, or was it possibly an option and some do not have the master unit in the car to receive the remote signal. His car has most of the options, ie premium package etc.

I believe with the E36 platform vehicles the remote only works when the factory alarm is installed...I could be mistaken

Early z3's had no general module in the vehicle. On these cars you had to install the BMW accessory 2-button remote Alpine system. After a certain production date (and I think it was mid 2001) A general module was installed which gave you keyless entry without having to add the accessory Alpine alarm. Try posting the last 7 digits of your VIN # and perhaps somebody here can look into it and find out of your car is equipped with it or not.
