Wheel rubbing

I just purchased a 1992 740i, when going through the American inspection in Germany they found the left front tire was rubbing the shock, the guy I purchased the car from said he would pay for the damage to be fixed (the mechanic said he had to order parts and the repair was going to cost more than the car was worth), now I have seen no list of what was done or anything however I can not see any new parts and the wheel doesnt rub?? however now the right front has a clunking noise???? does anyone know what the mechanic may have done to fix this or what should i check for myself as he only speaks German and I only speak English?

Was there any evidence on the tire or wheel that would back up his claim that anything was rubbing at all? I have evidence on my car that when the previous owner ran over some sort of debris on the road, the inner lining of the wheel wheel space (plastic shroud over wheel) had been distorted and rubbed on the inside edge of the wheel, but left no sige of damage on the tire, or any burning smell because it would have be very intermittent. This is not the shock absorber which is pretty much fixed (as far as I know) relative to the wheel. I would have thought it would either rub, or not. Mart5 may have some more insightful input on this. Good luck
