What Type Of Anti-freeze/coolant To Use

It is COLD in New York right now and I just got the "Check Coolant Level" light. I was wondering if anybody knew of what type of antifreeze I am suppose to use for a 740i (1998). Does anybody here not use the BMW ($18) brande, and if so, what color and brand do you use?

Also I've noticed that in this dead of cold the steering fluid is often times not functioning as well as it should be, is there something i can do about the viscosity of the steering fluid. Does it have anything to do with the antifreeze being low?

Many will say use only BMW anti-freeze as well as use only BMW batteries (they make neither). ZEREX G-05 is equivalent to what BMW uses and can be purchased at PEP BOYS or Auto Zone for around $8.00 per gallon. I use this in my 1988 750 and have no problems.

I thought I saw at Bavarian Autosport a BMW brand antifreeze. Maybe that is just the same thing you were talking about...but I can definitely say they were selling it for $18.

Do you know if i have to drain my antifreeze before I put in more.

ZEREZ G-05 is compatible with BMW brand.
