hello, I am unsure which mods had the V12 enginge in it? is it the 850i and the 760? also how much HP do these engines put out "around abouts" I am about to start building a spitfire and the plans have been modified to take a V12 jag instead of the merlin but I have allready had a quote of $32,000 just to get the engine to 400hp and I really need somthing a little more!! "up to 680hp would be ideal" so I thought why not BMW
Why not BMW? I wouldn't like to be in the garage at time of testing a 7 litre v12 wound to 700bhp!
You find a V12 in varying forms of tune in 750s, 760s, 850........ in the slightly more exotic (my fave and sig car) Hamann Leguna Seca (http://www.fast-autos.net/hamann/hamannlagunaseca.html) and in the ultimate Maclaren F1.
You also find the v12 in the LMR (below).. but I don't think you'll be able to source one of those!
Go for the big sevens, they are quite good value and have almost fully depreciated now. You can get examples in my area for around £7k ($12k)

<span style='color:gray'>"...and the home of the brave..... is bravey 130bhp from a 7 litre engine? 100bhp/litre or don't bother building it!"</span>
<span style='color:red'>"Aaahh the UK; where every road is jammed, under construction, poorly maintained and unfairly policed, at least we don't get over-taxed for it........ HA HA HA!"</span>
Just rechecking the thread: Are you building a plane? used
The V12s are very lazy and not rev happy, I don't know if that changes your mind.... you might find it easier and safer to get that power from a charged big block V8.

Well there was the 5.0L V12 M70 in E32 750iL and E31 850i/A
The 5.4 L V12 M73 E38 750iL and E31 850CiA
The 5.4L V12 M73TU (only difference is E-cats) in E38 750iL
The 5.6L V12 S70 Found in the E31 850CSi
And the 6L V12 Direct Injection N73 found in the 2002-present E66 760
hey guys thats excatly the info I needed to read!! it is going into a plane a spitfire mach 4 tats the whole point the engine never needs to rev higher than 2600 2800max rpm and idle at 850 to 1000 is ideal, now remember thats constant hp, like boat Hp they give hp on costant cycle ie engine 1 produces 300hp 100% at 2500rpm for eva and eva and eva but may produce up to 350hp for only half an hour!! so you see I have to get an engine which is reliable at a constant rpm range which I have specified at the top!
and by the sounds of things I think I will go 6 litre V12 (760) or possible the 5.6 and put a soft compound turbo on it actually theres no reason why I can't put a turbo that boost's 15 pound is there as I have a constant speed prop there is no way I can over power it!!
So I guess you guys couldn't help me find out how to double the HP of the V12 then
P.S maybe we can go steal the motor out of the LMR!! think they would notice if we relaced it with a M44 :nana
Between 1000 and 2500 rpm it will be difficult to generate a significant amount of power.
Have you thought about truck engines? They rev very slowly but generate far more torque than passenger cars. I don't actually know (there are some people here who do) but you'd be able to get something like a 12litre engine with 300bhp and 1500lb/ft of torque. It might be a little heavy for flying applications.
Cool project though.....!
