Get a diagnostics carried out first, that may let you know what the problem is, it may just be the switch, as for an update if its an E38 no point as thats the last year they were made if its an E65 it can be updated but only at main BMW dealer.

how do i diagnose the problem?,,i did with a obd2 scanner and have no error codes,,or take it to a shop?

one guy said on this forum about the gearbox this:
"""To reset the computer is simple.....Disconnect the positive and neagtive from battery and cross these two wires, (with a screwdriver, or another wire) as long as the pos and neg are attached. Then open the ignition swith for 10-20 mins, re-connect the battery and the ecu is reset to default..."""

maybe this a one problem,,because after the accident ,,the computer thimks that the care is in drive,,so maybe a computer reset will fix that proablem,,need to try ,,but scare not to fry the computer..!?

thank you,

No way would I do that on a 2001 model !!! on the old E23 and E32 yea no problem but not this era, but thats up to you.

Still can you tell me what model you have ? as im shooting in the dark here!! E38 or E65 ????

and by the way the gearbox is operated via the EGS and not the ECU

It may be the selector switch.

I think your selector switch has malfunctioned..... It is mounted on the side of the trans I believe... Go under the car and check. Also does the light on the guage cluster move at all when ou move the shifter?

If it is a hard hit I could see that or if after the accident someone Forced the shifter into park and forced it outta adjustment. Yep that is the part!

Its easy to adjust, a bolt with a cable running through it.

Edit:

The switch in your link is accessible from above, ASAS I thought you were talking about the selector on the side of the box with the Bowden cable running through it ?
