Transmission noise

1998 740i has developed a whine when transmission is cold in shifting between low and second. Have not had car long, it has 90K miles. Does transmission fluid need changed or is this something more serious?

u didnt have the car that long, you said....

YUP, you are on the right track... change tranny oil and filter. have your tech inspect the oil for color, metal bits, or telltale signs of wear.

That may( or may not) be the cure... but it will give you a better picture of the internals of your car ;-)
