Timing chain repair estimate

annapolis bmw has quoted $8,000 to replace the timing chain and the timing chain guide on my 2001 740il. the teflon-like material has broken off the guide and is in the bottom of the oil pan. Is this a reasonable cost estimate? and has anyone heard of this problem happening - the timing chain guide teflon like material breaking off?

Thats BMW prices for you, try an independent, pity your over the pond, I would do it for about $2000, Yes I have heard of the guide fracturing before, its not a common fault but does happen.If it's the camshaft chain tensioner, that's easy. You'll only have to remove the valve cover. But if it's the side tensioner(s) that'll involve removing the whole timing cover which is a huge drag.
