Hi there, Im looking at buying a 97 or 98 Z3, as a second car. Is there anything in particular I need to look out for on this car? I already own a 320 (E46) coupe as the main car and just want this for weekends. Im hoping to pick something up for around £7,500, do you think this is possible? I would appreciate any advices. Thanks.

Are you a female? If not, the Z3 might not be compatible

I am a guy and I love the look of the '01/'02 M Roadsters, especially in Estoril Blue. I know a bunch of guys who drive them, but their wives love to drive them just as much. The Z4s are nice, but I like the rounded look of the Z3s. Personal preference, of course.

I was showing some pics of an M Roadster to some coworkers and one of the girls, who didn't know anything about cars whatsoever, said the M Roadster looks like a girly car and pretty much everyone else agreed with her. I think it is because the rounded edges make it similar to a Miata, which I only see women drive.

The bottom line is, if you like the car, get it. If people say you drive a girly car, whatever, you will be the one having fun with it. Some people will try and tell you that the M Coupes are the best of them all since they are slightly faster and more rigid, but whatever, driving in a convertible, top down, on a curvy mountain road, and a sunny day is an amazing thing. A slightly faster 0-60 time isn't that important unless you are racing on a track and don't mind driving a car that looks like a clown shoe. The back of the Coupes looks great, but the side looks sillly...in my opinion, at least, all personal preference...

Those are a couple of sites you can check out for info on the Z3s. The first one is of Road and Track and has a good list of things you should look for and the maintenance that should have been done to the car before you buy it.

I would disagree with it being a girl car! Why are crummy little things always girl things? Girl cars, girl guns, girl screwdrivers...

Around here, I think I see more men in the roadster's than females... by a long shot. Personally, I am not a big fan of them. But, if you want it, get it. Dunno about pricing over there, but the older Z's have almost completely disappeared! Everyone's shelling out for the newer models, I s'pose... Cheaper for you. I think a 96 is around 8-10 grand... but those aren't kbb prices.

Yeah I agree, that's my only thing as far as the Z3s and Z4s. In fact thats why I own an Atlanta Blue Z3 versus a Z4. Well, that and Goldeneye.

But seriously, some things to consider:
On the 98's (and above), the role hoops come standard (Or I think they're standard)
On the 98's, if they are equipped with the 2.8 ltr engine, or anything above, more than lilkely you'll have a Harmon-Kardon stereo system, they came standard with this size engine, that year.

Those are some things you might wanna look at. My car, although used when I bought it, came with a lot of neat little extra's, the person who owned her before me loaded it pretty much. About the only thing I bought was a factory six disc for the trunk.

Another thing you may want to look at, turn the radio on and make sure the LED is working properly, the head units on this particular year had bad LEDs in the radio head units, behind the display.

Hahah its funny because my buddy absolutely loves Honda Del Sols, which many call a girls car as well, and the best way to piss him off is to call his car "cute."

But he's shown me pictures of other Sols, and they look pretty damn mean, I guess it depends what you do to it I suppose.

Maybe with a stock body it might look girly, but lower it a bit and have some agressive wheels might give it that edge you need if you care about others thinking the car is too girly. On the other hand, all that matters is if you like it or not.

I personally think the Z3 looks great and it never caught my mind that it was a "girly" car since the front looks aggressive and stylish, but too bad it doesnt have the taillights from the Z4....they would have been a great combo (I think the Z4's body styling is too refined or...something) It also depends on the color, go with blue or black! =D.

Good luck.

I forgot to put in my last entry, you said you showed the pics of the M Roadster to some coworkers and one of the girls...well, perhaps because the girl said that the M Roadster looks like a girly car, the other guys agreed with her because they got the impression from her that if they did like it they would seem .

If I saw the pic, and I was thinking, "hey that looks pretty cool I'd like to get one!" And then another girl by me was like, "ugh, that car is kind of girly."

I would feel pretty stupid.

You should have kept the woman out of it!

Yeah, they might have just agreed with the girl, but no one likes this girl, so they wouldn't have agreed.

I talked the dealership into letting me drive a 2005 Z4 Roadster (alpine white with red and black interior) all week while they worked on my 325i. Man, what a blast it is to drive that car! The sport button did add some juice to the car and I could tell, but the Steptronic took a little of the fun away. Sadly, the radio went dead shortly after getting the car, so I couldn't rock out to Audioslave anymore. Who cares, though? I had a better time listening to the engine when the top was down. I loved how people walking down the street would turn their heads and I got so many people in other cars telling me how hot the car was. Some people said I looked like a gay doctor in the car, but so what, they weren't driving the car. Once I took them for a ride, though, they shut up and said they loved the car. It was great having it all this week, but I have to give it back tomorrow. Oh well...I still want an M Roadster over the Z4, but it was a blast driving it!

I had a smile on my face all week, it was like having sex with a supermodel everyday before you go to work, during lunch, and right when you get home. Heh heh, although, I popped the hood for a friend because he wanted to see it. He said he drove M3s back in the 90's at some racetrack and he knows a bunch about BMWs. Yeah, ok...when he saw the engine, he said, "Man, that is a beautiful V6!" Whatever...

That sounds SOOO awesome!

(The fact that they let you drive a new car while they fixed your old one, not that you get to have sex with a supermodel 3+ times a day)

lol....
