Replace brake fluid? When?

My mechanic says it's not necessary to replace the brake fluid on my 2000 740, even though the owner's manual says to do it every two years. Whom should I believe?

i would do it according to what the manual says. i do not know the specifics of your 740 warranty, but i'd guess that part of it stipulates sticking to the maintenance schedule.

the mechanic can tell you all the opinions he wants, but he is not the one who will have to pay for work not covered by warranty if you as the owner didn't follow the warranty conditions.

It is recommended by BMW to do a bi-annual brake flush. However, this is based on average driving conditions and habits. If you do routine heavy braking (ie. track days) then it might be wise to flush sooner. Brake fluid does break down and also creates moisture as it ages. If you want to maintain proper breaking performance and maintain long brake system life ... flush every other year or sooner per operating conditions.
