new guy with a 740il problem

i recently picked up a 1993 740il. it sat for about 8 months or so in police impound before being auctioned off. the guy that bought it drove it home and all was good. the next morning he went out to leave and the floor was covered in coolant where the heater core busted. when he started the car to take it to be repaired it popped up trans program on the dash. the shifter will move but it wont engage any gear. It just revvs like it is in neutral no matter what gear. he paid $1000 to have the heater core replaced but the shop he chose could not figure out the trans issue. it has been reset and as sson as you put it in gear it pops up again. the fluid has been checked and is full. it does not show the gear indicator on the dash and wont show what mode is selected. trnas is extremely clean with no leaks. has anyone experienced something like this before? i have no reason not to believe what the guy told me about driving and shifting good. if it didnt i cant see him spending the money replacing the heater core. the shop says the believe the trans control(computer) is bad. some say valve body? anyone have any ideas?

It could be a lot of things. The clutch system that actually engages gears may be a starting point.

I would say the transmission got fried when the coolant leak happened and he drove it to be fixed as there are two lines from the box to the rad which cool the fluid. If he drove it home from the sale and all was fine there is no reason for the box to suddenly pack up, when they do they dont go from excellent to nothing, they normally jerk or slip....does it judder or make any attempt at going forward at say 3000-4000 rpm?, It maybe the EGS but only diagnostics will let you know this, if there is no response from the EGS the its fried...have you checked all your fuses including the ones under the rear seat? I presume we are talking e32 here?

no it revvs like its in park no mater what gear. he didnt drive it to be repaired because it would not drive even in limp mode. i noticed something yesterday after running at operation temp for 15 mins and shifting through all the gears i checked the trans fluid through the fill plugs and its full but the fluid wasnt very warm.

Ok, When its up in the air you need someone else to look under to see if the bowden cable is actually operating the lever on the side of the box as these are known to break, it wont actually go into limp mode unless a gear is selected, also you can not check the fluid level correctly without the car running and in 'N'. Have a look at the bowden cable 1st to see if its actually working....

As in Module I presume you mean the EGS ( box ECU), the only way to find this out is via diagnostics, if there's no response from the EGS then its fried, I dont think its the VCB as it wouldnt just go instantly.

well i removed the center console the gear selector switch on the shifter is pretty fried. and then theres a cable going from a gray bar up into the dash. what is this? because the lever is broken.

That was was going to be my next avenue....the selector switch,, if you were unable to get diagnostics undertaken as that would have shown the fault, the cable from the grey bar I would say is what tells you on the dash what selection your in 'P' 'D' etc. A pic would be helpful.....But obviously the selector switch need replacing.
