hellllllloooooooo, you're on a BMW board, we tend to be a bit biased.

Don't ever mention the Mercedes word again in this forum.

of four friends with BMW 745i's there have been Five engine rebuilds and two trransmission replacements....all under 100,000 miles. I have yet to see one with over 150,000 miles on it. I would never ever ever buy any 8 cylinder BMW, I am convinced that they are all destined to follow the same trail of the 750 V-12 disaster. My 1988 735 six cylinder has almost 200,000 miles and the engine is like new inside and the transmisson is the tightest I have ever seen. I expect to drive it for another 200,000 miles. My son's 318 has 160,000 miles and is 100% reliable. My opion is the same for the Mercedes V-8 engines go for an e-320 with a straight six if you want longevity. Just a guy who drives alot.

he;s actually right. Yall should look at Consumer Reports. BMW has a horrible record for reliability.. at least with the 5 and 7 series. The 3 seems to hold up better for some reason.

edit: but mercs weren't much if any better....

I test drove a used 3 series that looked to be in great shape, contemplating trading my new GTI on it, and was so dissapointed with the quality of the car that I walked away with a very low image of BMW. The car had lots of little rattles, no power, and the controls looked cluttered and complicated to easily use while driving. I RAN away from that deal, and then found a 740iL that I absolutely love.
the 740 is a 95 model, and it's still as solid to drive as my new GTI is.
