I just purchased my first BMW (128i) and was wondering what the concencous was about purchasing an extended warranty for this vehicle.
The manufacturer warranty is great, but I was thinking about adding the 7yr/100,000 mile warranty to it. I usually keep my cars 10-12 years before unloading them on someone else.
I have had both good and bad experiences with extended warranties. The warranty I would by purchase would be from the dealer (a third party company, not BMW).
Third party warranties aren't what they used to be. Pay close attention to all of the fine print.
It's not the fine print I have trouble with - it's how well this vehicle will hold up during the 7 years of the warranty contract.
Being unfamilar with the BMW brand, I don't know if I will be wasting my money betting something major will go wrong during those 7 years.
I guess I'm asking from those with BMW experience, what are the odds that a several hundred fix will be required during that 4th to 7th year when the extended warranty will be in affect.
I'll guarantee you that you'll have repairs totalling over several hundred dollars during years 4-7. However, I'm not convinced that your extended warranty company will cover them--that's what I was trying to say. If you can extend the manufacturer's warranty, that's another matter.
I think that if you maintain the car, you won't need the warranty. If you don't maintain, the car will break, and they warranty will probably say its your fault and not pay.
