I own a 2001 740i. The check engine light came on so I scanned for the problem. The code came up 0011 Vanos. So I called the dealer and they encouraged me to bring it in. After checking the car, they said I needed to replace the cam sensor on bank 1. So I bought the sensor from BMW and replaced it. I cleared the code and after two cycles, the check engine light came back on. So I scanned once again and this time the 0344 cam sensor code appeared. So I thought maybe I had a bad cam sensor. I decided to switch the sensors from bank 1 and 2. I scanned again and the with the old cam sensor from bank 2 on bank 1, the 0011 vanos code reappeared. Bank 2 did not show any faults. So I called the dealer again and they said it was possible I needed to reset the adaptation values. Is this the case? Could it be another sensor on bank 1 such as the cam shaft selonoid? Also, how do you reset the adaptation values?

to my mind... "reset adaptation values" simply means:

CLEAR the Check engine light, let the engine run and let the computer do it's job

for the DIY'er... do it a few times, jst to rule out that the idea that the computer isnt playing tricks on u. If after the 3rd time u get the same code, then let us see

*of course there is a phase of operation known as "computer relearn"... but that comes naturally as you drive.

All the hype the dealers use is just another way to make you feel they ARE THE EXPERTS... fall for it if wish to. 'am not
