check engine light help on my 1995 740il

I have a 1995 740il with 187k. it has the 1996 4.4l swap in it. the check engine light is on and i need to jump the circuit to read the code, it has the round BMW diagnostic plug, i believe it to still be the obd-1 set-up has anyone done this, or do you need to have it plugged into a BMW bullshit computer?

Hi, how are you going to READ a code by jumping the circuit without a laptop or computer???

well, cars before 1996 , use4d to flash the check engine light, a certain amount of times at a certain speed, honda's, chevy's, nissans',dodge's basically every car used this method, i assume by your suprised reply that BMW and most cars over 20 grand will not do this? well let me know, thanks-Jordan
